Computer and internet access is an issue that can increase inequality. One initiative is helping connect people with technology.
The Jackson County Housing Authority is helping residents who lack access to computers and internet by offering computers for $20 and wi-fi hot spots for fifteen dollars. Director of Social Services Alexandra Hamilton said they’ll be able to help a number of residents, making it easier for them to attend school or apply for jobs.
“We partnered with PCs for the People, and with that partnership we’ve secured 500 computers, 75 hotspots and we’re going to do months of internet access for the computers,” she said.
Local businesses have also sponsored computers and hot spots. In addition to providing qualified residents with computers, the Housing Authority also hopes to set up community centers with printers for residents to use.
